Youth Activities and Sailing Programs

Mini Ragnots:

Pre-requisite: 5-7 years old, 1st week compulsory

    The Mini Ragnot course provides a fun-filled introduction to a lifetime of sailing.  Children will be introduced to sailing “solo” in optimists with mini sails under the close supervision of instructors. The curriculum involves learning through demonstration and practice. Topics covered include the names of boat parts, finding wind direction, learning to steer with the tiller, fundamental seamanship skills and most importantly safety.  The class enables the children to become familiar with water safety and dinghy sailing, and to feel comfortable around the yacht club and on the water. Independence on the water is a big step, so as always, the emphasis is on fun.  

Class Times: 9:00 am to 3:30 pm

Charter: Charter of a club Optimist is required for those not sailing their own boat.

Dates: June 28 - July 02, July 19 - 23, August 02 - 06

Cost per week: Members $150 per week, $375 for 3 weeks

Optimist Learn to Sail Program:

Pre-requisite: 8-14 years old

    This is an introduction to sailing for the young children with little or no previous experience. In stable, sturdy Optimist dinghies (designed specifically for beginners), sailors learn basic steering and sail control skills in a small-group environment. On land instructors teach the fundamentals of sailing.  Curriculum includes parts of the boat, weather and safety information, through games and interactive lessons. This program emphasizes safety, fun, and learning.


Class times: 9:00 am to 3:30 pm

Charter:  Charter of a club optimist is required for those not sailing their own boat.

Dates: Week 1 June 21 - 25, Week 2 June 28 - July 02, Week 3 July 05 - 09, Week 4 July 10 - 16, Week 5 July 19 - 23, Week 6 July 26 - 30, Week 7 August 02 - 06

Cost per week: Members $150 per week, non-members $250/week

Optimist Racing Program:

Pre-requisite: 9-15 years old(previous sailing experience required)

    This world class program is for Optimist sailors who are looking for a fun environment, in which they can take their sailing and racing skills to the next level. Curriculum includes a mix of fitness, strategy and training for entry racers through seasoned competitors. Sailors in this class will have opportunities to compete with the Houston Yacht Club race team in local and national regattas. 

Class times: 10:00 am to 4:00 pm 

Dates: Week 1 June 21 – 25, Week 2 June 28 – July 2, Week 3 July 5 – 9, Week 4 July 10 – 16, Week 5 Optimist Nationals in Fishing Bay, VA (does not include coaches travel expenses), Week 6 July 26 – 30.

Cost per week: Members $150 per week, non-members $250/week. 

Members discount for 5 weeks $125 per week (can include TYRW and Optimist Nationals).

Must sign up for a two week minimum (not including TYRW or Opti Nationals).

Laser Sailing Program:

Pre-requisite: 13 - 17 years old (previous sailing experience and own laser sailboat required)

    The Laser has been chosen for Olympic sailing due to its simplicity and popularity worldwide. The Laser is fast and responsive, giving sailors a chance to build on sailing skills in a single-handed boat. This program is for Laser sailors who are looking for a fun environment, in which they can take their sailing and racing skills to the next level. Curriculum covers strategy and training and includes a fitness component.

Class Times: 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

Dates: Week 1 June 21 - 25, Week 2 June 28 - July 02, Week 3 July  05 - 09, Week 4 July 10 - 16, Week 5 July 19 - 23, Week 6 July 26 - 30

Cost per week: Members $150 per week, non-members $250/week

Members discount for five weeks $125 per week (can include TYRW).

Additional coaching fees will be charged for Laser Gulf Coast and North Americans

Double Handed Sailing Program:

Pre-requisite: 13-17 years old (previous sailing experience required)

    Sailed in high performance 420s and 29ers this program introduces the additional elements of spinnakers and trapeze in the team sailing environment. The program focuses on racing skills with a curriculum covering a mix of boat handling, tactics and tuning.

Class times: 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

Charter: Charter of a club 420 is required for those not sailing their own boat

Dates: Week 1 June 21 - 25, Week 2 June 28 - July 02, Week 3 July 05 - 09 Week 4 July 10 - 16, Week 5 July 19 - 23, Week 6 July 26 - 30

Fun Week:

Pre-requisite: 9-17 years old

The final week of summer fun at the Houston yacht club. Activities will range from tuning and wakeboarding through windsurfing and kayaking.

Class times: 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
