Racing at HYC

Sailboat racing at HYC has a rich and historic tradition dating back over 110 years to the founding of the Club. From Fish Boats and the Gulf Yachting Association to modern sport boats, HYC’s Race and Regatta manages events from weekend Club series to World Championships. Hardly has there been a year when the Houston Yacht Club hasn’t hosted a World or National Championship. Olympic Trials have been held in Galveston Bay – organized and managed by our well known and experienced Race Management Team.

Training and growing the Race Management Team is always a priority. Each January, HYC hosts an “Introduction to Race Management” seminar over two days to build knowledge of both racers and Race Officers in the Galveston Bay area. USSailing Race Management and Judging Workshops are often held at HYC to certify both Race Officers and Judges. With numerous Regional and National Race Officers, the HYC Race and Regatta organization frequently travels to other locations to run events that require the level of experience built over many years.

The primary mission of the Race and Regatta Committee is promoting and running the many racing events held at the Houston Yacht Club. The racing schedule at HYC is very busy. Over the course of the year, Race and Regatta puts on nine days of Club Series Racing (Spring, Summer, and Fall series), the HYC MidWinters and Turkey Day Regattas. HYC’s Race and Regatta also provides the on-the-water teams to run the races for the Elissa and Leukemia Cup Regattas as well the NOOD Regatta. Other Club related events like Revognah, the Double Handed race, and the Friday Night Series.

Race and Regatta is always interested in finding folks of all ages who would like to learn more and participate in learning and managing racing events at Houston Yacht Club.
