Junior Sailing at HYC

Recognized as the premier youth sailing center on Galveston Bay, the Houston Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program is the perfect environment for your child, from novice to experienced sailor and racer. The program provides high-level sailing instruction and coaching for young sailors from 5 to 18 years old.

Junior Sailing at HYCHYC provides a fun environment conducive to learning, safety, making friends and providing the passion for sailing that lasts a lifetime. Our program is geared for young sailors who want to compete at the regional, national and international levels of sailing or just learn to race and learn to sail. In the summer months HYC provides one of the most sought-after Summer Sailing Programs for youth; HYC provides the finest instructors and coaches from around the globe to provide a world-class sailing experience.

2017 Summer Activities
This summer we are all about FUN! Our summer program goal is to have every sailor who steps through our doors to gain a love for sailing. Whether they want to have fun with their friends or race competitively, we have a program for everyone! Through our programs, sailors will learn a sense of leadership, commitment, sportsmanship and passion for the water and sailing. We understand that every sailor learns best in a positive environment and strive to have every sailor leave with a positive memory of camp and sailing. Junior Sailing Camp at HYC2017 Overnight Camp
When: June 11 – 16
Price: $550

Our summer program begins with a long standing Texas tradition of overnight camp. This is a week-long camp catering to juniors and seniors that will have sailors on the water in Optimists, Lasers, Flying Scotts and Club 420s during the day and participating in fun activities at night such as a talent show, crafting, trips and a movie night. We have two groups: Junior camp and Senior camp. Junior Camp is for sailors 9 and older; they will be sailing Optimists with a chance to sail on some bigger boats throughout the week. Senior camp is for sailors 13 and older; they will be sailing Lasers, Flying Scotts and Club 420s. Don’t worry if your sailor has no sailing experience, instruction will be provided through our summer coaches during the day. The sailors stay in the clubhouse with parents supervising. Year-Round Practice
When: Every Saturday from 9 am – 4 pm (Mini Ragnots 9 am – 2 pm)
Spring Session: March 4th – June 3rd
Summer Session: June 10th –August 26th
Fall Session: September 2nd – November 25th
Winter Session: January 6th 2018 – February 24th 2018
Price per session: Mini - $100 | Green/RWB Opti - $150 | Laser - $175
Year round practice is every Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm (Mini Ragnots 9 am to 2 pm). The goal is to have the kids get consistent time on the water, for the kids that want to race they get lots of practice, and the kids that want to hang out with their friends get to see everyone and have fun every Saturday

Spring Break Fun Camp
When: March 15th – 18th from 9 am to 4 pm
Price $250
Spring Break Fun Camp is open to all Ages under 18. It’s an all day camp from 9 am to 4 pm. Part of the registration process the kids will get to pick what activity they want the do every afternoon. They can pick from Sailing, Paddle Boarding, Kayaking, and Fishing. The Camp ends with an afternoon party!

Summer Fun Camps
When: Monday - Friday from 9 am to 4 pm
Session 1: June 5th – 9th
Session 2: July 17th – 21st
Price per session:$300
Summer Fun Camps are an opportunity for the group of kids to explore other water sport activities. Similar to the spring break camp, during registration the kids will get to choose between Sailing, Paddle Boarding, Kayaking, and Fishing. These camps provide a fun introduction to sailing and water sports

Learn to Sail Camps (Mini Ragnots - Ages 5-10)
When: Monday –Friday from 9 am to 4 pm
Session 1: June 19-23
Session 2: July 3-7
Session 3: July 24-28
Session 4: August 7-11
Price per session: $150
Learn to sail camps are open new sailors under the age of 10, who want to discover how fun it is to sail! These camps are focused on having fun while trying to learn to make their boat move. There are four, one week long sessions offered.

Opti Green Fleet Summer Camps (Ages 8+)
When: Monday –Friday from 9 am to 4 pm
Session 1: (Two Weeks) June 26 - July 7
Session 2: (One Week) July 24-28
Price per session: Session 1: $350 – Session 2: $175
We will focus on continuing to learn and improve our boat handling skills and start to talk about the rules of racing. This program is open to all beginning sailors, and those with a little more experience. This class will be covering Opti basics, as well as an introduction to beginning racing for those sailors looking to move to RWB Fleet as well as travelling locally to regattas.

Advanced Opti Summer Camps (Ages 9-15)
When: Monday –Friday from 9 am to 4 pm
Session 1: (Two Weeks) June 26 – July 7
Session 2: (Two Week) July 24 – August 4
Price per session: Session 1: $350 – Session 2: $350
The Advanced opti summer camps are for sailors that are over the age of 9. We will focus on boat tuning and continue to learn more about racing and boat handling. Sailors on the opti RWB team will work together to develop a team dynamic with the idea that no one improves without a challenge. Sailors will travel to local, regional, and national regatta’s. Boat ownership is highly recommended.

Laser Racing Clinics
When: Saturday & Sunday from 9 am to 4 pm

Price per session: $250
The Laser fleet is comprised of sailors who are already experienced racers and are looking to improve their skipper and boat handling skills. These clinics will be led by Mattia D’Errico, they will be focusing on high level racing skills.
