We are proud to announce that we have joined the race to restore ocean health with Sailors for the Sea’s Clean Regattas program. The ocean is in crisis with plastic waste, oil spills, and acidification threatening not only marine life, but also our health for generations to come. We are making sustainable strides to ensure this regatta protects the ocean. Please click HERE for the Sailors for the Sea Website.

OPTIMIST CHARTER INFORMATION

DEAR OPTI SAILORS AND FAMILIES

The Houston Yacht Club and its members are pleased to welcome you to our home on Galveston Bay as your hosts for the 2016 USODA Optimist National Championships. Originally founded in 1897 in downtown Houston, we are the oldest yacht club in Texas and have a long tradition of supporting boating and yachting in our area. In addition to the 2011 USODA Nationals, we hosted a US National Championship in 1993 (which was prior to the formation of USODA) and the USODA Midwinter Regatta on behalf of Southern Yacht Club in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina.  We are very glad to have the Opti’s back at HYC!

HYC has a proud history of being the home to many recognized sailors who have competed successfully in the biggest events in the world, including Olympic Medalists, America’s Cup and National & World Champions in many classes.

One of our core principles is to “encourage good sportsmanship and boating safety and to introduce youth to the sport of sailing and boating”.  Our youth program operates as the “Ragnots” and with the outstanding support of the membership has also developed a number of accomplished sailors and all around great kids.

We look forward to making your stay enjoyable and providing a top notch sailing event worthy of an OPTI Nationals - Texas Style.  If you have time, we suggest you consider joining us early to participate also in the Texas Youth Race Week regattas.

Sail fast, sail fair and sail safely and, while you are here, please always remember that our casa es su casa.

Gordie Keenan, HYC Commodore

Pat Gibson, Past Commodore and Regatta Chair
