HOUSTON YACHT CLUB

AN UPDATE FROM THE COMMORORE

NOVEMBER 11, 2008

It has been some time since our last general communication on the progress of our harbor rebuilding, so I wanted to provide this update to you.

First, on this Veterans Day, 2008, I want to acknowledge our military veterans, and our current military men and women, for their courage, dedication and commitment. We live in the greatest country in the world, supported by the bravest and best military in the world. It is because of these people who have served in the past, are serving now, and will serve in the future, that the Houston Yacht Club can prosper and grow. Thanks to you all.

Now, to the updates.

First, at the Special Board meeting held this past Sunday, November 9, the Board of Trustees (BOT) accepted the Harbor Layout site plan that was proposed by the Path Forward Committee. I believe that the PFC accomplished their Mission as approved by the BOT in September, and that they proposed a plan that truly supports the Purpose of the Houston Yacht Club. A large-scale drawing of this plan is currently situated in the main lobby of the Club.

In order to support the rebuilding of the harbor, numerous additional Committees have been and will be formed. Each of these Committees report to the BOT, as the BOT is the only authority in the Club that can approve actual spending in support of the harbor rebuilding.

To date, the following Committees have been appointed:

Harbor Engineering and Bid Review Committee.
The primary obligations of this Committee are to recommend to the BOT an engineering firm to support our new construction with properly engineered specifications, and to review (with the assistance of the BOT-approved engineering firm) all bids for harbor rebuild and new build work and recommend approvals to the BOT as necessary.
The members of this Committee are R/C John Peter (chair), Larry Wise, Marty Krafft, and John Gross.

Locker Committee
The primary obligations of this Committee are to recommend to the BOT the locations and general specifications for the dinghy lockers, the ramps, and all other amenities related to the youth sailing program and dinghy sailing in general. The members of this Committee are Pat Gibson (chair), E.J. Dochoda, and Barry Kendrick.

Club Boat Committee
The primary obligation of this Committee is to recommend to the BOT how we should proceed with the repair or replacement of the Club boats that were damaged by Hurricane Ike. The members of this Committee are Billy Richnow (chair) and Jack Yoes.

Ike Finance Committee
The primary obligation of this Committee is to recommend to the BOT alternative financing options for funding the harbor construction.  The members of this Committee have not yet been identified.

Additional committees will be appointed as necessary. In the meantime, I will strive to keep you all informed as to our progress on the harbor.

On behalf of the entire membership of the Houston Yacht Club,

Mike Bordelon
Commodore
