PATH FORWARD COMMITTEE OF THE HOUSTON YACHT CLUB
Progress Report #5
October 6. 2008
Greetings:
This Progress Report #5 is actually a request to our members regarding
the insurance situation on their boats.
It has come to our attention, through member input as well as through
independent sources, that the insurance market may immediately begin to
take a much more skeptical view of insuring boats along the upper Texas
Gulf Coast.
This is due in part to past storms, but it is reported to us that this
situation is largely the result of the significant surge that occurred
with Ike (reported to be at the historical level of a Category 4
hurricane), despite the relative weakness of Ike, which came ashore as
a strong Category 2 storm.
Our request to you is quite simple.
1. If you have insurance on your boat and
that insurance is expiring before December 31, 2008, please contact
your insurance company now to determine what, if any, new restrictions
they are going to put on your insurance.
2. If you, like Becky and I, lost your
boat to Ike, AND if you plan on replacing that boat by December 31,
2008, please also contact your insurance company now to determine if
their insurance restrictions will change.
3. Please send to me any information
about a change in deductible, change in coverage, or any new
considerations or restrictions your insurance company plans on putting
on your coverage as a result of Ike. The PFC will use that information
as additional consideration in the assessment of new harbor
configurations, slip construction, as well as piling and slip materials
in the course of the reconstruction.
Thanks for helping us, and for being a part of our reconstruction
efforts.
On behalf of the Path Forward Committee,
John Peter
