The young adult members at HYC are more than just an age group, though in general, the group is made up of members between the ages of 20 and 35 (and over... who's counting?). These energetic folks can be found all over HYC - from chasing little people around the pool to on-the-water racing. They have even been known to venture into the cruising world. Better known as the "kids," HYC's young adults are a great mix of second-generation members, college graduates interested in continuing to sail, transplants with sailing backgrounds and complete newcomers to the sport of sailing.
Our young adult members share a passion for the water, sailing, camaraderie and service to the club and the community. Members are often seen on the race course at local and regional regattas sailing on both the one-design and PHRF lines. They enjoy sailing a diverse mix of boats from single-handed dinghies (Windsurfers, Lasers, Sunfish) to larger one-design and racing/cruising boats (J22s, J24s, J80s, J105s, etc.), but most frequently you will find them organizing races for the large fleet of Vanguard 15s that can be seen lining the east entryway at HYC. In recent years, several members have been known to race offshore and have even joined the adventurous excursions organized by the Yachting Committee to local hotspots like Redfish Island, Double Bayou and even venturing as far as Galveston and Offats Bayou.
Our young adults take pride in being involved with other organizations at HYC and giving back to the sport of sailing. They are actively involved in the Women's Sailing Association and Membership Committee. They frequently volunteer time to help coach local college teams, as well as help organize and coach Windward Bound (HYC's women's sailing camp).
